World Vegan Day: Date, History, Activities & Quotes

July 13, 2022 5 min read

World Vegan Day is an annual event observed by vegans worldwide. Activities such as setting up stalls, holding potlucks, and planting memorial trees are used to highlight the benefits of veganism for individuals and the natural environment.

1.What is the Date of World Vegan Day?

World Vegan Day is observed on November 1st, and we are amazed at how far this movement has progressed! We recall how veganism began as a diet craze and then evolved into a lifestyle choice. On this special day, the joys and benefits of veganism are promoted, emphasizing how simple it is to adopt this cruelty-free lifestyle and raising awareness about the rights of our four-legged companions. Despite the fact that veganism demands for the rejection of all animal-based goods, a plant-based diet is the most effective strategy to support this transformation, with thousands of tasty vegan recipes or adapted versions of meat and dairy dishes available online.

2. History of World Vegan Day

This day is widely recognized around the world with exhibitions, lectures, restaurant specials, and events. This one day provides numerous opportunities for vegans to promote their lifestyle as well as anyone interested in adopting it. However, the green movement did not start with herbivores.

Donald Watson and Elise Shrigley, members of 'The Vegetarian Society UK,' were at a crossroads with the club in 1944. They avoided products made from or tested on animals, in addition to eliminating meat from their daily diet. However, society did not acknowledge their way of living as distinct, prompting the couple to form 'The Vegan Society.'

In 1994, in commemoration of The Vegan Society's 50th anniversary, UK celebrity and then-Chairman of the Vegan Society, Louise Wallis, declared November 1 as World Vegan Day. He also coined the terms vegan and veganism. When deciding on a date, there was some uncertainty as to the day in 1944 The Vegan Society was created. Wallis chose November 1st because he was aware of Halloween and Day of the Dead. As they say, the rest is history.

The trend has recently gained traction, thanks in part to renowned celebrities who have turned to veganism in recent years. Ellen DeGeneres, Zac Effron, Ariana Grande, Pamela Anderson, and many others are among them.

Food chains have faced the most difficult transition to veganism. Fortunately, what was formerly considered a difficult diet is now widely available in restaurants and stores, with a wealth of plant-based choices. Fast-food restaurants such as KFC and Burger King now offer vegan burgers, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief while still getting our fast food fix.
