World Teachers’ Day: Date, History, Activities & Quotes

July 14, 2022 5 min read

World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is an annual international event. It commemorates the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers, which is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situations of teachers worldwide. It was established in 1994.

1. What is the Date of World Teachers’ Day?

Almost everyone has a favorite teacher, someone who went out of their way to encourage them because they saw your potential. On October 5, observe World Teachers' Day, a global event founded in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Perhaps you're a teacher working hard to help young people learn and grow, just as Matilda had Ms. Honey, Harry had Dumbledore, and Cady had Ms. Norbury. Given that teachers shape future generations, dedicating one day each year to thanking them is the least we can do. Remember that teachers are important no matter where you are in the world today! Become a teacher yourself; educators from all over the world help students learn and become teachers. On this World Teachers' Day, look for a scholarship that will meet your educational needs.

2. World Teachers’ Day History

This holiday commemorates the adoption of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers in 1966. It establishes standards for teachers' rights and responsibilities in terms of initial preparation, continuing education, recruitment, employment, and learning conditions.

"With the theme 'Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession,' we recognize the critical importance of reaffirming the value of the teaching mission," says UNESCO's 2020 message. We urge governments to make teaching a first-choice career for young people. Above all, we honor the efforts of dedicated teachers all over the world who work every day to ensure that "inclusive and equitable quality education" and the promotion of "lifelong learning opportunities for all" become a reality in every corner of the globe."

On October 7, the official event will be held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

3. World Teachers’ Day Activities

Give a gift to your teacher

Kids can express their gratitude by sending a heartfelt "thank you" card to their teacher, surprising them with homemade crafts or drawings, or writing a poem of admiration.

Make teachers feel appreciated

Parents adore teachers as well! On World Teachers' Day, demonstrate how much you care. Set up a raffle with gift cards, coffee mugs, and other prizes in collaboration with your local PTA. Before the school day begins, provide coffee and donuts or ask parents to organize a potluck breakfast for teachers.

Treat teachers like royalty

A teacher's job can be stressful, exhausting, and frustrating. School administrations should spoil their teachers on World Teachers' Day. Having lunch catered or surprising teachers with a 10-minute massage are both excellent ways to show teachers that their efforts are appreciated. If October 5 falls on a weekend, celebrate on the Friday before or the Monday after.

Plan a breakfast or lunch

Plan a breakfast or lunch event at school or on the weekends. Join forces with other parents in your child's class to do the work and foot the bill. If no one wants to cook, you can always take them out to lunch or purchase a gift certificate to a favorite local restaurant.

Make a simple art

Create a simple art project with your children. Even some macaroni art that says "World's Best Teacher" or something similar can mean a lot. Just make sure your kids deliver their artwork on time!

Flowers are used to express love

Send your child's teacher flowers. Everyone enjoys receiving flowers at work, and teachers are no exception! Get the parents to chip in a few dollars each and you'll be able to purchase a lovely bouquet.

Surprise them with a special treat

Prepare a special treat for your child's favorite teacher. Cookies, brownies, and even homemade pies can be very meaningful. It is the most effective way to thank and express gratitude to teachers.

Gift certificates

Don't be afraid to give gift cards, especially if you're presenting them to a new teacher. Gift cards are an excellent way to express gratitude to teachers. This will contribute to teachers remembering World Teacher's Day.

Purchase movie tickets

Purchase something simple for your child's teacher, such as movie tickets. Everyone enjoys going to the movies. This will make the teachers feel appreciated and is an ideal way to recognize their contribution to your child's life.

Purchase classroom supplies

Teachers spend the majority of their time grading papers and taking notes. As a result, providing them with classroom supplies such as notepads, pen stands, markers, pens, and pencils will benefit them and make an excellent Teacher's Day gift.

Personalized Tote Bags are a great way to show your appreciation

Teachers must transport a lunch box, classroom supplies, a water bottle, and other items to and from school. Purchasing a high-quality, personalized tote bag for your child's teacher demonstrates that you value and appreciate them.

Make a "Break" for Them

Teachers work outside of school hours. They sacrifice family and personal time to review papers and plan lesson plans for the following day. You can relieve their stress and delight them by giving them a "break" treat, such as a round of golf or a spa day. This will make them happy because their extra effort will be recognized and honored.

Respect their generosity

Give your child's teacher a "Thank You" note that expresses how much you value their compassion, warmth, kindness, and patience, especially when they go above and beyond the call of duty to help you see the best in your child.
