Best DIY Christmas Stockings

July 18, 2022 17 min read

Even though holiday decorations are universally popular, decor styles can vary greatly between homes. Some people prefer a more traditional atmosphere, while others prefer something more modern. These preferences extend to all aspects of holiday décor, from trees to window displays to the humble stocking. Traditional stockings, boho stockings, sparkly stockings — you name it, a holiday store probably has it. However, if you want to ensure that your mantle hangings match your style, you can make your own Christmas stocking, which will also serve as a Christmas activity that your family will remember forever. What a win-win situation.

Learning how to make DIY Christmas stockings is actually a lot simpler than you might think. Sure, it's a little easier if you're already familiar with craft stores and can confidently wield a hot glue gun (or, better yet, master a sewing machine.) However, there are numerous tutorials for homemade Christmas stockings that range from simple to complex. All you have to do is find a stocking that fits your style and skill level, order your supplies, and set aside an afternoon to create the magic. (Bonus points if you have a Christmas movie or music playing in the background.)

So, this year, use these cute DIY Christmas stocking ideas to transform your fireplace mantel into a festive display. Making your own stockings will not only save you money, but your family will enjoy participating in the process.

1. Woodland Creature Stockings

Using our free templates, make these adorable creatures out of felt, fabric, and buttons. Print templates and cut all shapes out of corresponding felt and fabric to make the stockings. Sew a 14" seam around the front and back of the stocking shapes; turn inside out. Cut an 8" x 16" rectangle from matching felt, sew ends together with a 14" seam, turn inside out, and slide over top of the stocking. Tuck 3 inches of the cuff inside the top of the stocking and secure with hot glue. Glue a 34" x 10" strip of matching felt together to form a loop and hot-glue to the stocking. Cut a head shape from cotton batting that is slightly smaller than the felt pieces. Hot-glue the layers together after sandwiching the batting piece between the head shapes. Cut a 6" x 48" rectangle for the scarf and stitch the long sides together; turn inside out (use selvage as edge on short ends to avoid fraying). Wrap the cotton scarf twice and tie after attaching the body features (see below).

Deer: Arrange the following facial features in the following order: ears, antlers, cheeks, nose. Then, for the eyes, layer the eyelashes behind the white eye shape and make the pupils with 34" buttons. Everything should be hot-glued in place.

Fox: Hot-glue the outer ear shapes to the back of the head first. The cheeks, nose, and eyes are then hot-glued, along with 12" buttons for pupils. Finish by hot gluing the belly and inner ear fabric shapes together.

Owl: Begin by hot-gluing the ears in place. Then, hot-glue the eye shapes (including 34" buttons for the pupils) and beak in place, along with the belly. Iron the wings and glue them to the sides under the cuff.

2. Ice Skate Stockings

These skate stockings are simple to make and are a fun way for your family to show off their favorite winter activity.
