Green Monday: Meaning, Date, History & Activities

July 12, 2022 3 min read 1 Comment

1. What is The Date of Green Monday?

The second Monday of December is Green Monday. The marketplace giant reportedly created the term back in 2007, describing one of its biggest sales days. Green Monday has since caught on elsewhere in the retail world, and now you can find Green Monday sales from all types of stores.

2. Green Monday History

This new retail holiday, only 12 years old, was invented by eBay in 2007 to describe the biggest online sales day in December. The second Monday of December is known as Green Monday because it is the busiest sales day of the month because of nearing holiday shipping deadlines. It's also the last Monday with at least 10 days till Christmas, which is significant if the item you purchased requires at least 10 business days to arrive. Stores typically offer some fantastic offers on Green Monday, with pricing that competes with Cyber Monday and Black Friday.

Top retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon participate in Green Monday too. They are able to extend the enthusiasm surrounding Black Friday and the holiday shopping season by participating. Discounts can be enormous — some refer to it as Cyber Monday Part 2 because it is the second most popular day for internet shopping. Its online component is particularly popular with Millennials and Generation X, while Baby Boomers prefer to shop in-store.

The "Green" in Green Monday means the money, which customers are more ready to spend now that Christmas is less than two weeks away. Green Monday creates motivation, which leads to increased online sales as individuals race to finish their holiday buying lists. The day has never been as well-publicized or planned as Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but many shops have taken advantage of the Christmas rush by providing can't-miss offers.

3. Activities in Green Monday

Cross off your list

This is the time! Are you ready to finally finish that list you didn't intend to forget about? Every year, Christmas sneaks up on us, but this is your moment to say thank you "I knew you'd show up! And my list is nearly finished!"

Get something for yourself

If you've already finished your Christmas shopping, it's time to indulge yourself. We can't depend on our friends and family to get us exactly what we want, so why not take advantage of this day to get yourself the Christmas present you truly desire?

Pay it forward

Get your 2020 Christmas shopping done early and save yourself some worry next year! Next year, you can sit back and watch the holiday shopping season take the rest of the population as its victim.

4. Something We Love About Green Monday

It saves us at the last second

It is challenging to find the ideal gift. We'd rather do it tomorrow because it's so difficult. But then tomorrow becomes "just a few days before Christmas," and we wonder where the time has gone! Green Monday allows us to make amends by saving money on products that would have been far more expensive if we had done our shopping earlier. Everything works out!

We don't have to fight crowds

Holiday shopping brings with it plenty of pet peeves, such as congested stores, disorganized shelves, and hard parking situations. Green Monday is an online retail day, so stay at home, get comfortable, and relieve a lot of tension!

It's a reminder that the holidays are near

We tend to lose track of time in the minutiae of daily living. Tuesdays have the feel of Thursdays, and this week has the feel of last week. Green Monday anchors us in time so that Christmas doesn't seem to appear out of anywhere (even if it most emphatically does!).
